How and Why do People Discriminate?
Popular social media apps such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok are addicting to people especially in Gen-Z nowadays. They helped people around the world to communicate to each other despite of long distance. The said apps may be helpful in terms of being socially active but it has also bad effect which is discrimination.
But what is discrimination? Personally, it is what we called when someone judged the certain person because of his/her way of living, physical appearance, how he/she post on social media, and race. Based on what I observed on Tiktok, which is the app that I’m most active, there are so many people who judge the creator or the person doing a certain video based on what the content is or the person’s race. Sadly, there are really huge number of people who laugh at someone’s skin, physical appearance and voice just because they don’t like it.
In the Philippines, when a person is discriminating others especially when having a conversation, no one really cares or maybe others do but it is not big deal for the. People normalized being judgemental because they always think that the are honest for saying that, but no. The common things that people discriminate here are being fat and having tan skin. When they saw you having a tan or dark skin which is new to their sight, they will say backhanded compliments to you such as “Oh you’re really beautiful when you’re white, try using whitening soaps” and “What have you done to your skin? You were beautiful back then when you still have white skin”. It’s so sad to think that family members are the worst people who discriminate their own relatives usually. That’s also the exact scenario in fat people. They always think that being fat is unhealthy and being slim is healthy but they didn’t know that it depends. Beside from that, other Filipinos are also discriminating black people. One example is when candidate Miss Universe Canada posted on Instagram about how racist the Filipinos are. As a Filipino, I’m trully embarrassed of what they did to Miss Canada. They judged her because she has black skin, but why don’t they realize that it is because she is not pure white? People are right when they said that Filipinos are the most judgemental people.
Now, let’s talk about the discrimination around the world. Years ago, I was a fan of documentaries especially on how life works in other countries. I saw that bullying and discriminating there are worst than Philippines because they really hurt people physically. They are crossing the line by sending death threats on people that they hate. I saw how they bully a person with different race. They throw foods on their faces, hurting them and they are including the family of their victims. I’m really surprised because of the fact that what I have seen on movies are not the same in reality. Well, I’m aware of that but not that much. Now, I know why most of the people in other countries have worst depression and attempting to take their lives.
When comparing Phillipines and other countries in terms of discrimination, they are just the same. I cannot take a side in my own country and also on the other countries because I know that it really depends on people. I don’t know when they will be educated and how far they will discriminate other people. I believe that discriminating just differ on how they add action to it. Some disciminates through words and some discriminates through words with action. We can’t control people because they have their own minds and decision. We don’t have a choice but to give advices.
Back then, I’m asking to myself, what’s the reason for discriminating people? After so many months of observing, I realized that people discriminates because they can’t have the success of the people they are discriminating. They always find worst thing to a certain people because they are envious. They also want to be succesful as the people that they hate and they are doing their best to bring down the person in order to get their success.
